Pablo Ruiz Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter and sculptor who spent most of his adult life in France. One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) and the anti-war painting Guernica (1937), a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by German and Italian air forces during the Spanish Civil War. His career spanned more than 76 years, from his late teens to his death in 1973.

Beginning his formal training under his father José Ruiz y Blasco aged seven, Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent from a young age, painting in a naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. After 1906, the Fauvist work of the older artist Henri Matisse motivated Picasso to explore more radical styles, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who subsequently were often paired by critics as the leaders of modern art.

Picasso's output, especially in his early career, is often periodized. While the names of many of his later periods are debated, the most commonly accepted periods in his work are the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1904–1906), the African-influenced Period (1907–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919), also referred to as the Crystal period. Much of Picasso's work of the late 1910s and early 1920s is in a neoclassical style, and his work in the mid-1920s often has characteristics of Surrealism. His later work often combines elements of his earlier styles.

Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art.

Eva Gouel, aussi connue sous le nom de Marcelle Humbert, née le 27 février 1885 dans le 12^e arrondissement de Paris et morte d'un cancer le 14 décembre 1915 dans le 16^e arrondissement de Paris, a été la seconde compagne de Pablo Picasso pendant sa période cubiste, de 1912 à 1915.

Nusch Éluard (born Maria Benz; 21 June 1906 – 28 November 1946) was a French performer, model and surrealist artist.

Born Maria Benz in Mulhouse (then part of the German Empire), she met Swiss architect and artist Max Bill in the Odeon Café in Zürich; he nicknamed her "Nusch", a name she would stick to. Their liaison ended after six months when Max Bill's plan to marry her in order to avoid her pending extradition from Switzerland was vetoed by his father (to whom he owed a substantial amount of money due to medical expenses following an accident which had forced him to leave the Bauhaus).

Marie-Thérèse Walter (Le Perreux-sur-Marne, 13 de juliol de 1909 - Juan-les-Pins, 20 d'octubre de 1977) va ser una dona francesa, amant i model de Pablo Picasso des de 1927 fins aproximadament 1935, i mare de la seva filla, Maya Widmaier-Picasso.

La seva relació va començar quan ella tenia disset anys; ell en tenia 45 i continuava vivint amb la seva primera dona, Olga Khokhlova. La relació es va acabar quan Picasso va passar a una nova amant, l'artista Dora Maar.

En les pintures de Picasso, Walter apareix com a rossa, en imatges assolellades i en colors lluminosos, com ara a Le Rêve (El somni, 1932), en contrast amb el retrat més fosc de Dora Maar, la Femme en pleurs (Dona plorant), on apareix amb un aspecte torturat.

Dora Maar, alias Henriette Theodora Markovitch (Tours, 22 november 1907 – Parijs, 16 juli 1997) was een Frans fotografe, schilderes en dichteres, die tevens bekend werd als minnares en muze van Pablo Picasso.

Haar vader was van Kroatische afkomst en haar moeder was een Française. Zelf groeide zij op in Argentinië en Frankrijk. Vanaf mei 1931 noemt ze zichzelf Dora Maar. Ze werd beroemd als fotografe en ging later ook schilderen. Ze maakte reclame- en modefotografie voor opdrachtgevers als Le Figaro illustré, waarbij zij surrealistische technieken – zoals fotocollages, fotomontages en fotogrammen – toepaste in commerciële fotografie.

Aanvankelijk was het voor de surrealisten niet evident hoe fotografie als medium binnen hun beweging paste; in het surrealisme ligt de nadruk immers op subjectieve gewaarwordingen, terwijl fotografie te boek stond als een feitelijke vorm van documentatie. Dora Maar vond een oplossing door te werken met extreme close-ups en onverwachte fotomontages, waardoor het bekende in een geheel nieuw licht kwam te staan. Daarmee leverde zij een belangrijke bijdrage aan het surrealisme. Zij was een van de weinige fotografen die te zien was op surrealistische overzichtstentoonstellingen in de jaren dertig in Tenerife, Parijs, Londen, Amsterdam, New York en Japan.

In 1935 ontmoet zij Pablo Picasso. Zij is dan 29 en hij 55 jaar oud. Ze stimuleren elkaar om nieuwe artistieke paden te bewandelen. Zij leert Picasso de complexe 'cliché verre' techniek – een combinatie van fotografie en drukwerk die hem al jaren intrigeerde. Hij stimuleert haar om weer te gaan schilderen, een medium waarmee ze de rest van haar leven zal blijven werken. Van 11 mei tot 4 juni 1937 documenteert Maar de voortgang van Picasso's schilderij Guernica. Tot dat moment was Picasso's werk niet expliciet politiek, maar door de invloed van Maar verandert dat. Vanuit de studies voor Guernica ontstaan The Weeping Woman, waarvoor Maar model stond. Negen jaar lang is Maar Picasso's model, muze en buitenechtelijke partner.

Van 1944 tot 1997 woonde zij in Ménerbes (Vaucluse), waar ze een atelier had. Pas na haar dood in 1997 wordt de reikwijdte van haar werk erkend.
